New Wave Typography Study

This project explores the visual language of New Wave typography, a design movement that challenged the strict grid systems and functional minimalism of Swiss Style by introducing expressive composition, layered structures, and experimental typographic placement. Emerging in the 1970s through designers such as Wolfgang Weingart, the movement encouraged designers to treat typography as a dynamic visual element rather than a purely neutral communication tool.
The compositions experiment with irregular spacing, varied type weights, angled text placement, and layered hierarchy to create rhythm and visual energy across the layout. These characteristics reflect the New Wave approach of breaking conventional grid alignment and expanding typographic expression through scale, texture, and structure variation.
Through this exploration, the project demonstrates how typography can function not only as readable content but also as an expressive compositional system that communicates movement, tension, and personality within contemporary editorial and poster-based design contexts.
